Review: Supergirl

DC’s Supergirl has made its debut to the big screen for the first time in the DC Universe (DCU).  The film had one key green flag, Supergirl herself.

Milly Alcock portrayed Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, the cousin of Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman, played by David Corenswet.  The story takes place after the events of 2025 Superman movie.

Kara is living a carefree life with her dog Krypto.  She is pub crawling and traveling the cosmos.  But all soon changed when she meets Ruthye Marye Knoll, played by Eve Ridley.

Knoll’s family were murdered by Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts.  Now Knoll seeks to kill Krem and Supergirl ends up working together to stop him and save Krypto.

Alcock’s performance as Supergirl was exceptional.  She’s a drunk party girl who covers up her pain of her past.  Alcock’s emotion in both comedy and drama captured her character well.

The fight choreography in the movie was above average. The fights showed Supergirl for who she is..a warrior and a protector.

The red flags of the movie were the performances of Ridley and Schoenaerts. Both were bland with their performances. Neither one expressed enough emotion in their screen time and it made their characters less appealing.

Bottom line: Milly Alcock carried the entire film, but not enough for it to be big success. Supergirl will be more of a hit in future DCU movies including more scenes with Corenswet’s Superman.
